If you are a badminton player, then you’ll know that shuttlecocks made of feathers don’t last very long.
They tend to get damaged very easily. Whether it’s from a miss-hit or just normal play, it can break with no prior notice.
Broken or damaged feathers are not easy to play with. they lose the flight ability in a drastic amount. Sometimes it affects the speed too.
To increase your shuttle’s durability, the best thing to do is steaming. By humidifying the feather, it will introduce moisture to it. The moisture will make the shuttle softer and reduce the chance of breakage when hit.
Now, you might be wondering how to steam a shuttlecock. Well, look no further, because here I’ll give you the instructions on how to steam a shuttlecock and also what equipment you might be needing to do it.
You can find specialized shuttlecock steamers in the market which are built only for steaming a shuttle. But the great thing about steaming is that you can do it with any type of device which produces steam. For example, you can use appliances such as steamers, rice cookers, kettles, etc.
How to Steam Shuttlecocks
Here is a step-by-step process to steaming a shuttlecock with a normal steam producing device.
Step 1: To steam the shuttlecocks, first, you’ll need the shuttlecock holder. You have to then remove the lid off of the entry end and the exit-entry.
Step 2: After that, you have to place the shuttles inside the holder. Remember that it is best to steam the shuttles a day before use so that there’s time for the shuttles to retain moisture.
Step 3: As the shuttles are set inside the tube, you have to take the tube and place it over the steaming device where the steam will come out from.
Step 4: You have to put the entry end on the top of the steaming apparatus so that the steam will flow through the feathers of the cork first.
Step 5: The moment you see steam outside the shuttlecock holder, you have to turn off the steaming device and take the tube off of it.
Step 6: After taking the holder from the steaming device, you have to put the end caps back on as quickly as possible to prevent the steam from escaping the holder.
Step 7: With both lids on, you have to put the tube on a solid surface. You have to keep it a vertical position with the exit end and let it sit for 12 hours.
Step 8: The steaming process will take from 30 seconds to 1 minute. It’s best for you to keep the holder standing for 12 hours because the longer it stays with the steam, the more moisture the birdie gets to absorb.
Now, with this procedure, you can steam birdies with any type of device that produces steam.
